Fire and Ice Friday
|
This was a nasty storm, worst hail storm I have seen in a while. We
started out by taking the boat out Friday afternoon. It was a beautiful
day out, blue sky, warm temp, and not too many boaters. Joe called and
asked if we wanted to come over, he was gonna have a fire. We headed over
there around 8:00. Leaving the Bend we noticed a large thunderhead moving
out of the west. Looked like a typical rain cloud but it was pretty damn
big. Deaton showed up who is also a meteorologist, he assured us it would
miss us. No one knew what the weather radar looked like, I called up to
get the low down, not much could be determined. Around 9:00 Joe and I
were talking and I asked what that freight train noise was, it sort of
startled me because it sounded tornado-esque.

Everyone was jabbering and
all of a sudden it hit. We all split pretty quick, Steve Levi and I
went for the truck. Joe and Keith headed for the bus. Levi and I soon
the bus was much safer. We bailed out the side door and I grabbed Gunny
to head for the bus. Steve was too slow in getting out and got trapped.
Right as my foot was stepping in the door the hail came. It was
immense! There were golf ball size hail coming down on the bus. The
windows were holding up but the hail kept coming down. It was insane the
amount of ice raining down on us. For about 20-30 minutes the hail pounded
the bus. Then it let up and it was the rain. About 15 mins after that
it was gone. Steve's hood was thrashed, the jetta was beat to hell
and I realized that I had left all the windows open in the house.

Steve and I left for the house to check on things, driving out of Drapers
we could see the damage. Trees were down and leaves were everywhere. Coming
home we could see the damage getting worse, our area got it worse than
others. Our driveway was washed out in the middle. Everyone of our oak
trees were stripped of their leaves. 5 of my solar lights were busted,
one window in the bedroom had been broken. The bunker storage shed had
holes thru the roof. It was a disaster area for sure. The whole property
was covered in leaves. I went to bed after seeing all that.

The next morning I slept late, did some stuff here and there and boarded
up windows. It kept raining off an on the whole day and into the night.
I guess one rainstorm wasn't enough. The next morning I headed over to
Nelson's and dropped off some tools I borrowed. Cleared some trees for him
then headed back to our house for cleanup. Liz and I raked leaves for about
four hours. I started building a garden. Gunny sat and got a tan all
day. It was a crazy 3 days. As always remove /thumbs from the URL
to get the big pic.
